Anthony Naples – Body Pill (Proibito) – review
Anthony Naples latest release (via his own Proibito imprint)) is called Body Pill (whatever that is) and, though i’m not sure to call it an album because it’s eight tracks but only 28 minutes long, it’s excellent anyway. On Body Pill Naples follows his way of developing an open minded idea of electronic music that isn’t easy to define, using elements from all house, techno, ambient and so on, creating music that can be rough and melancholic at the same time. Of course this is a concept that isn’t new, especially in the last years lots and lots and tons and tons of producers walked this way, but Anthony Naples is talented and, despite the fact he started releasing only three years ago (with the fantastic Mad Disrespect on Mister Saturday Night), experienced enough to design his own recognizable and remarkable styles, eager to try out and take a look at stranger things. On Body Pill Naples leads his audience in said short 28 minutes through a stunning tour de force of various moods and tempos and sometimes it might be kind of a challenge to keep track of what is happening: there are (quite short) uptempo-tracks as Abrazo and Refugio, with enormously hissing hi-hats, throbbing synth melodies and haunting strings, harsh and distorted but never ending up in technocratic apocalyptic scenarios, it’s New York Underground Music. And there are (quite short) sketches like the humming drone Ris (that reminds a little of Rafael Anton Irisarri), the damaged brightness of Pale and the dry fragile ticking of Way Stone. The last two tracks make the record even more diverse, Used To Be comes up with an unexpected dubstep feeling grounding a dramatic melody while Miles is beautifully clouded house music, deep and driving, ending in oscillating patterns on repeat, stumbling out of a record that is heavily characterized by Naples’ consistent avoidance of stretching out and lengthen his visions, keeping it tight where others would be tempted to make an 80-minute-album from the same ideas. Naples is a searcher. On Body Pill he found something interesting. Written by Joao Geck   You can BUY Anthony Naples - Body Pill HERE from whatpeopleplay.com
