Modeselektor – Monkeytown

After the Fall of the Wall in Berlin the 'adults' kept other worries than the euphoric, passionate youth and the space of old ruins were the perfect place of raising acid house parties. Here Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary got to know each other in 1995. They formed their project 'Fundamental Knowledge', breaking boundaries and creating a mixture of dubstep-techno-dancehall-hiphop-idm. Soon they renamed their project into Modeselektor and became friends of Ellen Allien. They released their debut on her label BPitchControl, the mostly renowned techno label that is based in Berlin. 'Hello Mom' was the name of the first album in 2005 and 'Happy Birthday' followed up in 2007. While making a detour to the label Get Physical, the guys formed their own label imprint 'Monkeytown Records' in year 2009, that mostly concentrates on their own work beside stuff from Siriusmo and eLan. They collaborated with other renowned artists like Maximo Park, Puppetmastaz and Radiohead. Thom Yorke lent his voice for two tracks and also got infected by DJing and listening to electronic music through Modeselektor's good nose for perfect beats. Modeselektor discovered vast rooms of electronic music while they cooperated with Sascha Ring alias Apparat to form the new project Moderat. Mind blowing soundscapes and full basses are expressed in their music and well performed live on the stage. This creative and convincing work now continues with their new album 'Monkeytown', that gives an eclectic music formation. As already mentioned, Thom Yorke graces two tracks with his distinguishing voice. 'This' already is a favourite song here, Yorke's rhythmic voice samples magnify until the big wall of noises break off and an almost spiritual sound is formed by synth expanses ascending continously. A nervous bass line slowly metamorphoses into highpitched synths, sets in and sets out. A lot of suspense is created through the intermissions of bass, synths and Yorke's voice samples. Other guest appeareances are brought in by Anti Pop Consortium with an abstract hip hop track. Breakbeat and IDM producer Otto von Schirach appears on an aggressive, powerful electro track called 'Evil Twin'. Miss Platnum sings along with heavy hiphop beats while Apparat and Siriusmo give their assistance in producing. All in all, Modeselektor again present themselves at their best. After every album you might have thought there is no upper point to reach, but somehow they always find another level to prove their vitality and creativity.
