Review on: Alex Burkat – Last Days of Flatbush (The Nite Owl Diner)

There are some first-class records in Brooklyn guy Alex Burkats discography (such as Pay The Rent!) and he worked with top-notch-labels as 100% Silk, Third Ear and Permanent Vacation, but, for reason unknown to me, he never released anything on his own (together with Christopher Shively aka Chrissy) Nite Owl Diner imprint, a label that since its start in 2014 earned a high reputation for its deep and discoid stuff. “Never” until now it is, because The Last Days Of Flatbush just appeared, a four-track-EP full of inspired House Music. The Last Days Of Flatbush starts a little unexpectedly as the thrilling Spinning Plates consists of distinctively rattling percussive rhythms and not much more. With Style Wars the groove gets more fleshy, some sleekly rolling beats stretch its disco muscles with half-hinted reverberating harmonies hovering over the whole thing.
Moving Day then entirely brings the glitter on, the whirling synths, the punchy sequencers and not-too-fast rhythms evoke a flashy neon-coloured feeling of dancing through nocturnal cities, totally sure what to do. Red Pineapple follows that path and above all impresses with one hell of a big bass line and some nice and skillful shifts in rhythm. Very groovy, very interesting, very entertaining, what more could you want? Alex Burkat never disappoints but with The Last Days Of Flatbush he really nailed it. Highly recommended!
