Review on: Alexander Brandl – Second EP (Osmund Audio)
Alexander Brandl is a new name (at least to me) but his “Second EP”(released on German label Osmund Audio, actually also a new name to me) makes an instant impression: three first class cuts, technoid and reduced, building a subtle momentum that makes them stand out from the bulk of dance music released every day. “Cluster” is the first track and illustrates this momentum quite well, the beats are punchy, the bass line is deep and that’s all fair enough but there’s more to find, an elastic bounciness, transparent groove elements and light-footed shifts. Together this elasticity and transparence generate an extra kind of vigour that will bring some special vibes on the dance floor. “Hub” is also grounded on straight-forward rhythms topped by beautifully modulated synth lines ascending and descending again, building up tension and pushing things ahead yet avoiding pointless brutality. DJs will love it, I guess, because it’s one of those tracks that, with reasonable certainty, will carry away any crowd. The third track “Multiple” doesn’t disappoint either, maybe it’s even more of a tool than the other two, a steady flow of beats and claps and minimalistic chords, not that much at all but way enough to let the clubs swing. In the end the “Second EP” turns out to be dance music in pure form, simple in a way, but with the right kind of idea and twist that’s needed for, you know, really working out. Art and technology, that’s what it is, highly recommended stuff! And it’ll be interesting to check out what the new names Alexander Brandl and Osmund Audio will deliver next.
