Review on: Alva – French Kicks (Pont Neuf Records)
There’s a lot of exciting new stuff coming from the French House scene at the moment and this record by Parisian duo Alva on Pont Neuf Records is an exceptionally good one: “French Kicks” brings French kicks indeed, four tracks of classic House Music that really do it. Alva, who had their likewise excellent “Mental Scapes” as premiere release for Pont Neuf in 2016, have a knack for the classic feel of groovy House with warm sounds and juicy beats and they let it loose on the EPs first tracks “Cécile Du Flow” and “Pont 909”. Compelling bass lines and vibrant chords with just the right kind of mellowness that puts the dancers in a good mood and goes down extremely well. Cool stuff that’s as sticky as it is smooth. The third track is called “Harry Poppers“ and while I’m not sure if I really like that name I’m quite sure about the track itself. It’s a veritable stomper, a little more stripped down and more techno but still bouncy and fresh. “Drumsteak” then got an extraordinary bass and slick shuffling rhythms. For “French Kicks” Alva celebrate their inspirations and influences from the old school of House from Paris to New York but never forget to add their own clever treatment. A very good EP by Alva, Pont Neuf once more proves to be an imprint worth keeping one or two eyes on.
