Review on: D.K. – Mystery Dub EP (Second Circle)
Only some weeks ago I wrote quite enthusiastically about the latest coup by Second Circle, the indeed amazing “TBC” EP by Giuseppe Leonardi, now Second Circles next release appeared and they seem to be on a roll at the moment as the “Mystery Dub” EP by D.K. is a highly recommendable record. D.K. aka Dang Khoa Chau is no newcomer, he released the great “Drop” on Antinote in 2014 and had an amazing album with Suzanne Kraft out on Melody As Truth last year, and goes perfectly with the labels’ approach of featuring music that is still House or Pop but has this special leftfield (or whatever you’d like to call it) flavor. So the “Mystery Dub” EP is just like that, starting with the pristine House sounds of “Stick To The Rules”. You’d never call this track “phat” or “massive” cause it’s obviously the proper opposite: the gentle percussions, breezy harmonies and impressionistic piano chords are as weightless and transparent as can be, yet still groovy and focused enough. “Mystery Dubs” marimbaesque vibrations and birdsong noises result in a kind of Tropical House that easily soundtracks the sun rising at some place far away from where I am right now but D.K. keeps it subtle and avoids overdosing the sugar kane sweetness. “Rebound” then lets the straight beats vanish, still there’s a lot of rhythm in it. Delicate echoes, hints of tension lying underneath and soothing keyboard harmonies are reminiscent of former days’ music, of eccentric Pop band Japan, visionary dandies of the late 1970es, or sophisticated Tokyo-duo Dip In The Pool, who effortlessly melanged glossy pop and Japanese traditionals. But D.K.s stuff, without any vocals, has a more picturesque and universal appeal and, though it is maybe not that groundbreakingly new as Japans heydays were (mainly because it’s not 1979 anymore) the vivid shimmering in D.K. s music is highly impressive. The EPs last track “”Wise Bird” illustrates that quite well: lush and bright, whirring pieces in constant movement forming a whole, entering a rainforest with 50 shades of green. Beautiful and enjoyable, another winner for enigmatic Second Circle. Written by João Geck   You can BUY D.K. - Mystery Dub EP released on Second Circle HERE from whatpeopleplay.com.
