Review on: Giuseppe Leonardi – TBC (Second Circle)
Second Circle continue to follow their principle of releasing stuff by newcomers (is this word still in use? I’m not sure) who have other ideas than going for the next usual club-functional-thing, so, after Dazion and Androo, it’s Giuseppe Leonardis turn to contribute to the labels discography. Giuseppe Leonardi is a guy from Vienna/Austria and his “TBC” EP nothing less but a voyage through more than one universe of electronic music executed with an intriguing sense for a different way and a profound knowledge of how to use a synthesizer. The results are indeed amazing: Leonardis EP bursts with surprising sounds, vocals and structures, light-hearted and confident but also a little curious and spooky. The EPs first track is called “Unsinn”, which is (meaning something like “nonsense”) an appropriate name, not because the track is rubbish but because of its approach of playfulness, on first listen not going anywhere, not obviously making sense with its meatless beats, stumbling bass line and the xylophone tinkling. Yet if you let yourself get into it, you can’t resist the strange and very intense attraction of the sparkling keyboards and the mysterious chants developing a magical swing that’s really exciting. “Kannibalentanz” and “Orpheus“ are equally magical, tiptoeing through an underwood of subtle and complex rhythms, swaying synths with unexpected outbursts of shrill cries and mysterious vocals that come and go as they please. Can you dance to it? Sure you can, but the dance will be an odd one, you’ll move like a snake but your face will show no emotions. Enchanted music this is, with echoes of Electric Jazz, Krautrock, Bedouin Music, Psychedelia and all that twisting and lingering. The last two tracks then make away with the groove which leads to Ambient par excellence. Slow, still kind of jazzy chords breathe in and out calmly, floating the room with beauty and humble happiness. A warm place if there is one. On his “TBC” EP Giuseppe Leonardi masterfully avoids the linear and the theatrical, the aimlessness and murkiness and creates fascinating music, rich, transparent and weird. So in the end this release turns out to be quite stunning, even for Second Circles high standards. Highly recommended!
