Review: Tour-Maubourg – Déclaration préalable à l’embauche (Pont Neuf Records)
Pont Neuf Records is a quite new label from Paris, they’re quite into House Music (there are some really nice DJ-mixes on their soundcloud) and they have their second release out now: It’s the Déclaration Préalable à l'Embauche EP coming from Tour-Maubourg, a newcomer (or so it seems) to the scene. Over four lush tracks this EP deals with the deeper sides of House enriched with artfully interwoven Jazz elements and is, to come straight to the point, produced in such a profound and inspired way you might get the suspicion that Tour-Maubourg is not the freshman he appears to be. The EP starts with the title track whose beats and grooves are as sharp and tight as the piano sparkling above them is soothing and joyful. These contrasting sounds make the whole thing really exciting and it’s pleasing not just to have a simple chord played over the groove but a full grown solo piano shimmering. These jazzy things appear also on “Thank You My Friends”, with the overall mood being warmer and more gentle. Sophisticated horns casually contribute a smooth melody yet the beats are still going strong so don’t worry, no lounge music included. “Spleen” opens up with odd voice samples, the trumpet plays some blue notes but again there’s a clarity in the clicking hi-hats and reduced rhythms that keeps it all focused and stops it from getting too theatrically moody. Finally one of the EPs highlights is “La Plainte d'Aurore”. Here Tour-Maubourg allows a little more opulence and lets sweeping harmonies float all over the place, indulging in finesse, weightlessness and driving beats. An epic pleasure, both uplifting and filled with longing. All in all this Déclaration Préalable à l'Embauche EP is a very good release that actually reminds me of last years À L'Ouest EP by X_1 (another French guy), not so much in styles of music but in precision und a vision of creating something special and distinct in a genre that sometimes sees a bit too much of traditionalism. Excellent stuff, vive la France! Written by João Geck You can BUY Tour-Maubourg - Déclaration préalable à l'embauche (Pont Neuf Records) HERE from whatpeopleplay.com.
