THIS WEEK IN BASS MUSIC – WEEK 7

Superdefekt’s Roundup of the last weeks entries in Dubstep, Techno, Halfstep, Nustep, UK Garage & House
Next selection for week 7 with new releases by Dubbel Dutch, Bob Citrus, Nisse Nilson, ? ?, The Phantom and more.
MIX034 – Dubbel Dutch – Self Help Riddims – Mixpak Records
Playful and melodic bass riddims, halfway between digital dancehall and SciFi trap. Groovy, swinging and very european. BPMs ranging from 90 to 120 assure that there is something for everyone. Nice one.
L2S091 – Bob Citrus – Ways Of The Underground – L2s Recordings
A pretty self-explanatory track title like Garage 92 shows exactly what you can expect from this two track EP: UK-styled, 2steppin‘ garage house in a very oldskoolish fashion with sharp cut snares, swinging rhythms and pitched up vocals. So solid.
PLATTER003 – Al Tourettes & Paradroid – Reality Hostess / Brother Rides The jailhorse – Schmorgasbord Records
Accompanied by Paradroid Al Tourettes rides further down the electro lane. Four tracks of futuristic breaks music owing as much to Mantronix or the Jonzun Crew as to mid nineties british, techno and early Autechre. Very very good.
NIX006 – Nisse Nilson – All The Memories EP – Nixwax
Fluffy techno tracks with a fragile scent of chicago house, bathing in warm and sweeping detroit analogies. Especially I Need It knows how to grab you, teasing at first with melancholic synth waves, then morphing into a grooving latenight techno affair, as classic as classy.
TEAL007 – Beastie Respond – Fictitious Nostalgia LP Sampler – Teal Recordings – 18-03-2013
Gloomy and melancholic slow motion bass tunes, precious little odes to the early night, even bearing some moody pop fragments .
4TH008 – ? ? – Skyway – Fourth Wave – 4th008
Self-indulgent leftfield house tracks in the same line as Vessel or labelmate Gerry Read. Clever and surprising four to the floor music of the more advanced kind sounding a little bit like the european equivalent to Theo Parrish or Moodyman.
YMF008 – The Phantom – Piano Moods – Your Mama’s Friend – 13-02-2013
Party ready neo garage house with a big love for those beautiful keyboard melodies, be it a warm house organ or euphoria inducing rave pianos. Newskool with an oldskool flair.
PAN38 – Sensate Focus – Dèviation Heat-Treated – 04.01.2013
Two more of those trance inducing avantgarde dance epics by SND‘S Mark Fell in his Sensate Focus moniker. This time he remixes two tracks by PAN records wunderkind Heatsick in true excellence. Endlessly meandering hypnosis hymns constructed from tiny fragments of dance history. True academic house – and this is not meant in an insulting way. In the end it is just beautiful music.
