THIS WEEK IN BASS – WEEK 16

Superdefekt's Roundup of the last weeks entries in Dubstep, Techno, Halfstep, Nustep, UK Garage & House Selection for week 16 with new releases by Joker, Sepalcure, Anno Stamm, Alix Perez & more. SHA064 - Alix Perez - Annie‘s Song feat. Sam Wills - Shogun Audio - 14-04-2013 Shadow Child and Madd Slinky aka Zed Bias are the producers of choice here, adding in their remixes enough swinging garage flavor to the original material to make the legless dance. And it is Shadow Child who wins this duel, his production being a lot more committed to those edgy underground vibes. KAP010 - Joker - The Face Off - KAP010 - Kapsize - 12-04-2013 Joker is back - and not much has changed. And why should he, his style of grimey instrumentals swinging with some distinct boogie flavor is still unparalleled. Same goes for his production skills. DKY009 - The Range - Seneca - donky pitch - 22-04-2013 Melancholic experimental pop, rather taking the wonky but scenic route through the leftfields than driving middle of the road. Supreme night songs full of influences of the multifaceted history of dance music, be it hip hop, garage, disco or electronica. CCBCD001 - Various Artists - Paris Club Music - Volume 1 - ClekClekBoom Recordings - 22-04-2013 Shortly after Nonplus Record‘s brilliant compilation we have the next promising label retrospective, this time courtesy of French Fries‘ parisian ClekClekBoom Recordings, presenting you an overview of the french bass music scene. But where Boddika, Joy Orbison and their buddies are drifting off more and more into the direction of techno music‘s rather straight roads the french boys remain faithful to the true bass sound. Meaning swinging breakbeat mutations atop seriously deep sub frequencies. Recommended. 2NDRPLP001D - Djrum - Seven Lies - 2nd Drop Records - 22-04-2013 No disappointments here, Djrum‘s debut album is convincing from beginning to end. With clever rhythm patterns ranging from hip hop inspired downbeat to half- and 2step like swing, warm chords, influences from soul and R‘n‘B and an overall atmosphere of melancholic relaxation he spins a seductive web of intoxicating music, an early contender for this year‘s best home listening bass music longplayer. HF039 - Sepalcure - Make You EP - Hotflush Recordings - 22-04-2013 After their various solo missions Travis Stewart aka Machinedrum and Praveen aka Braille report back on their home label Hotflush with this voluptuous EP, demonstrating that they still have the right touch. Five tracks of exuberant creativity, sweet and warm atmospheres to get drowned in and sophisticated rhythms which never lose the groove. Brilliant. OSMUK028EP - Kryptic Minds & Killawatt - No Fear Of Future - Osiris Music UK - 22-04-2013 Minimalistic post dubstep tunes for the darkest hour of the night, riding the sharp edge between bass music and dub techno into a future full of dystopian nightmares. WPH 018 - Various Artists - Wales vs. Germany: 2-2 - We Play House Recordings - 22-04-2013 Split Ep between welsh producer Luv Jam and Germany's SRF Inc, each providing two tracks. And it is hard to pick a favorite here, every tune is a little masterpiece in itself, prime examples for sophisticated next level deep house. Another winner for the belgian We Play House Recordings. ACOS1X12 - Anno Stamm - FragmentsA - All City Dublin - 09-03-2013 Anno Stamm is the new moniker of 50Weapons‘ secret weapon Anstam, this time going for a straighter route a little bit more dancefloor directed. But of course without losing sight of his roots in experimental electronica and his talent for top notch sound production. If Autechre or Aphex Twin would be regular Berghain ravers, maybe their music would sound like this. MB013D - Various Artists - Moda Black Vol. II - Moda Black - 15-04-2013 Another label compilation chock-full of brilliant dance music. And where Boddika‘s/Nonplus Record‘s Think & Change was quite techno oriented awhile ClekClekBoom stood true to their bass music roots this one, with artists like Shadow Child, Eats Everything, Ejeca or Huxley, is measuring the never ending world of house, from modern new jersey garage to bass music and back to classic oldskool. A pretty good funride this is.
