THIS WEEK IN BASS – WEEK 5
Superdefekt’s Roundup of the last weeks entries in Dubstep, Halfstep, Nustep & UK Garage
Nice selection for week 5 with new releases by Ital Tek, FCL, Perverse, Exit Records & more.
GoldFFinch‘s notorious Funky Steppa in a congenial reworking by Swamp 81 darling Trusta – tight as fuck, as they say. Same goes for Policy‘s remix of Outer Twigs, using a leftfieldish house approach full of warm analogue sounds. Worth every penny.
CIV046D – Ital Tek – Hyperreal – Civil Music – 04-02-2013
Warm and engaging post dubstep sounds out of Ital Tek‘s sonic laboratory – taking more than one clue from oldschool electronica styles. A route which Throwing Snow is taking in his remix as well, whereas Deft is going for a more energized, rhythm-centric approach in his reworking.
LNUK004 – Boxwork – Boxwork EP – LNUK Records – 04-02-2013
Framed by two warm and fluffy bass house tracks with a distinct playful british feel this EP holds two dancefloor weapons which emphasize skeletal drums and deep basslines in a Swamp 81 manner. Not bad at all.
IMRV003 – Gantz – Enso / Siyam – Innamind Recordings – 04-02-2013
Two tracks of dready halfstep rave for the rude bwoy posse, using classic ‘arcdcore mentasm sounds in conjunction with deep tribal grooves and darkest sub bass waves to full effect. Impulsive deep night dancefloor atmospheres for the dubstep warehouse.
LMNL001D – Youngstar – Pulse X Remixes – Liminal Sounds – 28-01-2013
Five bass kick heavy reworkings of Youngstar‘s Pulse X. It‘s all about the drums here, be it distorted and grimey as in Slackk‘s gunshot filled version, halfsteppin‘ as in Elsewhere‘s mix or concentrated on the snares and claps as in the remixes by Pedro 123, Visionist or Blackwax. One for the Swamp 81 crowd and – even more – the Night Slugs posse.
NMN006D – Perverse – Echolocation – New Moon Recordings – 28-01-2013
Dubstep in its purest form. Fearsome brooding sonic bass sounds reverberating out of the hollow starless spacey beyond the populated galaxies. Atmospheric in the darkest sense.
EXIT043 – Dub Phizix & Skittles – I‘m a creator – Exit Records – 28-01-2013
Two contemporary drum‘n‘bass tracks which took a lesson or two from modern bass music. The title track is a skeletally jumping grime‘n‘bass tune, the b-side reinvokes classical jungle structures in a ultra fresh way. Top notch.
TBMP3113 – Various Artists – CZ / SK EP – Top Billin – 30-01-2013
Eight banging party tunes from the Top Billin Crew, ranging from deep sub bass shuffling halfstep tracks to oldskool rave reminiscences, from contemporary bass house and 303 heavy hip house to favela funked bass groovers. One for everyone.
DFTD394D2 – FCL – It‘s You – Defected Records – 04-02-2013
Epic afterhour reworking of FCL‘s deephouse extravaganza It‘s You – relying only on vocals, claps and some sparse bass this is one lush and blissful monster of a track. Beautiful in every sense.
