Transition – studio talk with Egokind and Ozean
"Transition", released on Traum Schallplatten, is the debut album by the Berlin based producers and trained musicians Jan Hammele aka Egokind & Andreas Huber aka Ozean.  In this tech talk they talk about the production process of two tracks taken from the album. "We Float Around (And Hang Out On Clouds)" The production of "We Float Around (And Hang Out On Clouds)" started with nothing but the piano riff, which still is the main basis, the core of the track. It's the first track we have ever made, that has kind of a hip-hop-like groove to it, but we pretty quickly agreed on the fact, that it would wrap up the harmonic idea in the best possible way. After trying out lots of different synthesizer sounds we came to the conclusion, that a pure piano sound would fit the best. Since we're no big fans of software plugins trying to imitate real instruments we went to the "riverside studios" in berlin to record a real piano and a rhodes. It was one of the best decisions we could have made for this track. It just needed to really be played with an instrument and not with a computer. We were looking for a dreamy, flowing, psychedelic vibe to surround the composition and create a certain deepness without loosing the straightforwardness and the minimalistic approach of the main melodic content. In the end we ended up recording tons of weird samples like broken glasses, crushed ice, several shakers and our own voices. We even sampled tiny fragments from movies we like. It was very important to us not to use any digital sounds but only recorded material because every sample in this track adds its very own room, atmosphere and even history to the song. All these sounds were processed and edited to build an organic, moving and complex collage, which surrounds the piano line and gives it a fundament and a freaky world to live in. Due to all these audio samples this is definitely one of the tracks where our computer crashed the most. Mega Mega is the first track on the Album. It is also the first track of the album sessions which we got finished and it really felt like a catalyst for the whole album, from that point on. We were actually not even in our own studio at that day but hanging out at some friends studio and were just trying out some stuff. Weeks earlier we had begun to collect all nice Vinyl Drum samples we could get our hands on so we had enough material to start with. We programmed the drums in about 20 minutes and Andreas sat down to try out some melodic content on the piano. When Jan had finished mixing the drums we were already pretty happy about the melody, that Andreas had composed but when Jan started to give his full attention to it, we both knew that we had created a basis for a nice track and even more for the whole album. We also discovered that we could create music in a very short amount of time without overthinking and overanalyzing everything. After this session we composed almost every track by composing the drums and intuitive composition. (Written by Egokind and Ozean) You can BUY THE ALBUM HERE from whatpeopleplay.
