THIS WEEK IN BASS – WEEK 11

Superdefekt's Roundup of the last weeks entries in Dubstep, Techno, Halfstep, Nustep, UK Garage & House Selection for week 11 with new releases by Squarepusher, South London Ordnance, James Welsh and more. ISR004 - Keeling House - As we Mean To Go On - Inner Substance Recordings - 13-03-2013 Uplifting, lighthearted Funky/House hybrids. Especially the DH7 remix aims to please with summerly vibes, whereas Elevator convinces with a slightly psychotic and bitchy atmosphere. MOF004 - Youan - Girl EP - Minds On Fire - 12-03-2013 Do not listen to the first track of this EP only. Its maximum big hall antics really are quite revolting, that‘s for sure. Thankfully it gets better and better with each track afterwards, delving deeper and deeper in warm and sweet house harmonies with strong roots in UK garage, especially the way vocal snippets are used. Nice. LNUK002 - Last Japan - Ambush/Tactics - LNUK Records - 11-03-2013 Two deeply rollin‘ bass swingers, taking more than one idea from older drum‘n‘bass styles. Pretty good. CIV054D - Reso - Tangram remixed - Civil Music - 11-03-2013 Interesting journey through the different bass music variants, from the sweet to the rough, incorporating post dubstep as well as drum‘n‘bass. Especially the one by Doshy is worth a mention. WAP336CDD - Squarepusher - Enstrobia - Warp Records - 11-03-2013 Mini EP which was originally given to vinyl buyers of his latest album, continuing the styles of just that (apart from the one musique concrete style ambient track). In other words: quality. TEC069 - Dark Sky - Confunktion - Tectonic - 18-03-2013 Confunktion is one monster of a peak time track in the known and loved Dark Sky style, putting strong emphasis on the grooving bassline. Double U is a bit more restrained, convincing more with it‘s clever percussion patterns than sheer force - actually the more interesting tune. 50WEAPONS026 - Bambounou - Full Of Feelings - 50 Weapons - 15-03-2013 First track is a piece of abstract bass music in the tradition of Bambounou‘s Orbiting album. The surprise then starts with the second tune, a straight forward four to the floor techno house crossover track. And it doesn‘t stop there, as the closing track is an atmospheric ambient tune of sorts, combining lush detroit styled synth pads with clever drum programming. IDLE017 - Rhythmic Theory - Legacy Of The Lost - Idle Hands - 18-03-2013 Bass heavy techno something tracks, reduced in production but big in their effect. Especially the b-side with it‘s sparse arrangement and swinging percussion pattern is a winner. L2S092 - Whistla - This Love - L2s Recordings - 18-03-2013 Sweet and organic future garage vibes on this one, full of syncopated rhythms and warm atmospheres. This Love is the more dancefloor related track whereas Future Jammin is sort of an latenite chill out affair. HFT028 - South London Ordnance - Revolver / Transmission Funk - Hotflush Recordings - 18-03-2013 South London Ordnance debut on Scuba‘s Hotflush label with two more than convincing bass music bombs, shuffling their sinister ways through the course of techno infected four to the floor rhythm patterns. Dark and hypnotic. Recommended. DOT014 - James Welsh - The Way / People Let Me Down Remixes EP - Join The Dots Music - 18-03-2013 Two remixes riding on the small edge between bass music and house. Both are pretty good, but once again it is Tom Demac‘s groovy entry which pleases most. This guy is on a serious roll at the moment. PNTS004 - Alex Coulton - Too Much Talk - 92 Points Recordings - PNTS004 The original track here is a clever programmed rhythm centric bass journey, working it‘s magic with not much more than a drum machine and a bass synth. While this track is quite advanced and sophisticated, Tessela turn it fully around in their remix, going for a full on peak time approach with a nod to early nineties techno music. Beneath, on the other hand, preserve the sophistication, but aim for a deeper, much darker vibe. CCB009 - French Fries - Everything / White Screen / D‘Angelo - ClekClekBoom Recordings - 18-03-2013 Three swing heavy bass music tunes, sometimes with a nod to drum‘n‘bass (in rhythm programming, not speed), atmospheric techno vibes or even latenight electro. As usual with French Fries quality from beginning to end. POLY001D - Tessela - Hackney Parrot - Poly Kicks - 18-03-2013 Just one track here, but that one is pretty wicked, paying tribute to early UK ‘ardcore and proto drum‘n‘bass. Rough, tuff and beautiful.
