Superdefekt's Roundup of the last weeks entries in Dubstep, Halfstep, Nustep & UK Garage Fine selections for week 46 with new releases by Squarepusher, Pinch, Kryptic Minds & many more. 01 - L2S088 - Whistla - On Drugs - L2s Recordings – 12-11-2012 Going from future garage to dubbily bassed halfstep to ravey house, detroit influenced breakbeats and even some wobbling, this EP has quite a lot to offer. One inside for every taste. 02 - GSR005 - Pedro 123 - Slush EP - Get Some – 12-11-2012 Sparse but funky UK Bass tunes, relying mostly on the subs and swinging percussions. One for the minimalst bass head crowd. 03 - GDYRS003 - Utrecht – APC - Good Years Recordings – 12-11-2012 Joining R‘n‘B vocals with a house rhythm pattern and UK Funky percussion grooves Utrecht come up with a pretty smooth UK Bass deephouse hybrid. The club mix on the b-side adds some filtered rave piano stabs for good use as peak time material. 04 - ECB348 - Maribou State - Scarlett Groove - Southern Fried Records - 12-11-2012 Starting off with a pretty deep housey track (which is quite brilliant, by the way), Maribou State continue their EP with soft and warm bass music antics and even venture into some sort of modernized acid jazz territory - think Brand New Heavies in bass. Quiet a pleasurable little EP this is. 05 - ACRE037 - Primitive World - Danceteria - Black Acre - 12-11-2012 Another brilliant release from Black Acre, this time more on the danceable side of things. In fact, Danceteria is, as the title implies, quite a bass music monster. Same goes for the mighty dark groove of Cotopaxi and the leftfieldness of Run Interference. Pretty stunning release. 06 - WARPDD228K - Squarepusher - KCRW Session - Warp Records - 12-11-2012 Five tracks of your well known breaks-heavy and lazer-infected Squarepusher-madness. Glitchy drill‘n‘bass electronica as if it were 1996 again. In one word: classic. 07 - NR009 - Various Artists - Qawali Dub EP - Nasha Records - 12-11-2012 Bass heavy dubstep breaks in the most original sense. Meaning: no wobbling or drop-obsession in sight, instead a smoke infected, orientalized dubness style for the purist crowd. 08 - TECCD015 - Pinch - Missing In Action - Tectonic - 16-11-2012 Comprehensive collection of rare and selected Pinch b-sides and remixes. It‘s all about the bass here, in most sub heavy and minimalist styles. Dubstep as it was meant to be. 09 - PIPS020 - Phat Chex - Can‘t Stop / Git Da Funk - Apple Pips - 19-11-2012 After establishing itself as a mere deep house label lately Apple Pips seems to be back on the track now with two dark and epic bass music monster tracks with heavy roots in the moodiest techno. Outstanding, no less. 10 - OSMUK023 - Kryptic Minds - The Divide / Rule Of Language - Osiris Music UK - 19-11-2012 More Berghain-ready techno on one side, classy dubstep of the deepest kind on the flip. Class A release for the bass heads of all categories. 11 - EMB014 - Thefft - Name Shame - Embassy Recordings - 19-11-2012 Heavily mutated deephouse, swung around some corners in a bass music manner, on the front, a more straight forward kicking but still lovingly leftfield groove on the backside. Neat. 12 - 877004 - My Nu Leng -The Grid / Hips N Thighs - 877 Records - 19-11-2012 There‘s no doubt that The Grid will be one of this winters most precious bass music anthems, combining a distinctive techno feel with deepest bass and some garage flavors. Proper hit material. Hips N Thighs on the flipside, leaning more on the swinging breaks side of things, isn‘t bad either, but still The Grid wins in my book. 13 - 7EVEN25 - Ena - Purported / Whereabouts - 7even Recordings - 19-11-2012 Dark and atmospheric bass mechanics from Ena, dancefloor-ready on the frontside and more experimental and ambientish on the flipside. Very good release, recommended. 14 - 50WEAPONSCD11 - Bambounou - Orbiting - 50 Weapons - 23-11-2012 As could be expected by his recent releases, this first full length release by Bambounou is one hell of an album. Drawing inspiration from classic Detroit styles from Juan Atkins to Drexcyia and back again, he combines this influences with his distinct style of bass music to come up with music which is as fresh as it is futuristic in style and mood. Highest recommendation. (Written and contributed by Superdefekt) About: Superdefekt aka sdfkt. aka Tim Lorenz (co)hostes the famous MFOC (sunday) nights at Hamburgs finest micro club “Golden Pudel”.
